Setting a New Standard for Shrimp Welfare: A Tripartite Collaboration

Humane Slaughter Initiative Commitment

Shrimp Welfare Project (SWP) is proud to announce the groundbreaking tripartite collaborative partnership with Grupo Lamar and Labeyrie Fine Foods aimed at improving the welfare of farmed shrimps. This collaboration represents another significant step forward in our shared commitment to enhancing ethical aquaculture practices.

With Grupo Lamar —one of the leading producers and exporters of Vannamei shrimps in South America— adopting humane electrical stunning technology provided by SWP via Optimar, the partnership marks a pivotal step in reducing the suffering of farmed shrimps. Grupo Lamar is also known for sustainable harvesting and management practices, alongside their support for community projects. By joining the Humane Slaughter Initiative, Grupo Lamar showcases their strong commitments by also eliminating the use of eyestalk ablation and implementing stringent health and disease management protocols.

Labeyrie Fine Foods, a long-standing advocate for responsible food production, already involved in another SWP agreement, brings onboard a commitment to refining their approach to animal welfare, focusing on reducing their carbon footprint, and promoting biodiversity.
They have agreed to prioritise stunned shrimps from Grupo Lamar, underscoring the importance of building a resilient and sustainable food system through ethical shrimp farming practices.

This partnership represents a holistic approach to improving shrimp welfare across the industry. Jointly focusing on humane slaughter methods, optimal water quality, responsible feeding practices, and health monitoring is a testament to what can be achieved when industry leaders unite with a shared vision for a better future for the shrimp farming industry.
