Corporate Engagement

Working with the seafood industry towards excellence in responsible shrimp farming

We are dedicated to supporting the seafood industry in its transition to more humane and higher welfare shrimp farming practices.

Our commitment to animal welfare aligns with the industry’s goals of enhancing product quality, boosting consumer trust, and ensuring long-term sustainability.

We collaborate closely with global producers, seafood suppliers, and retailers to improve farming practices, especially in harvest and slaughter. Our approach includes providing guidance and support at every stage of the welfare improvement process. This encompasses consultation on best practices, implementation strategies, and offering free services and equipment to aid in the transition.

By working together, we help seafood suppliers integrate welfare standards into their supply chain and assist retailers in establishing policies that prioritise the welfare of aquatic animals, particularly shrimps.

Humane Slaughter Initiative

This initiative focuses on improving animal welfare during harvest and slaughter in the global aquaculture industry.

The programme aims to promote humane slaughter practices by providing electrical stunners to aquaculture operations at minimal or no cost, ensuring that animals experience minimal stress and pain during slaughter. Producers commited to stunning a certain volume and following good farming practices will be provided with an electrical stunner.

This effort enhances animal welfare standards and supports the industry's commitment to ethical and sustainable practices.

Shrimp Welfare Index

The Shrimp Welfare Index is a tool developed by SWP which provides a framework for best welfare practices based in the most current, peer-reviewed science.

Retailers and corporates can use the Index to benchmark suppliers or to craft their own farmed vannamei sourcing policy. To learn more about how SWP's Shrimp Welfare Index can work for you, please reach out to shannon@shrimpwelfareproject.org.

Eyestalk Ablation-Free

This page is dedicated to celebrating producers who have committed to using non-ablated broodstock. By sharing their stories, we want to acknowledge the care they take for  their broodstock. We also highlight retailers and seafood suppliers who have implemented strict policies to eliminate the practice of eyestalk ablation in their supply chain.

Through these efforts, we aim to raise awareness and promote more humane practices in the shrimp industry, shining the spotlight on those who are leading the way in responsible and ethical aquaculture.
